When Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, the directors, said in a meeting that the song needed to be cut from the movie, Howard Ashman, producer of the Little Mermaid and lyricist, tore him a new one. He explained sternly its value, that early in every great musical, the heroine sits down and sings about what she wants most out of life. And that from that moment on you fall in love with her and root for her the rest of the film. Howard said that cutting Part of Your World would be cutting the heart of the movie. A characterture of the interaction was drawn shortly after:
I miss Howard. He WAS the heart of Disney’s renaissance.
